The Amalgamated Transit Union is the largest labour organization representing transit workers in Canada and the United States. Founded in 1892, the ATU is currently comprised of over 185,000 members in 269
local unions spread across nine (9) provinces and 46 states. Composed of bus drivers, station attendants, transit enforcement, light rail operators, maintenance, office, technical and professional personnel and
other transit and municipal employees, the ATU works to promote transit issues and fights for the interests of its hard-working members.
Local 1587 was established in 1979 with the certification of the Go Transit bargaining unit and has gone on to certify and represent over 1900 members from five bargaining units across the Greater Toronto and
Hamilton Area including: Metrolinx, Can-ar Transit, Miller Transit, First Student and Can-ar Mobility; the later four consisting of all of regular and mobility York Region Transit workers.
